SECRET BOLOGNA EXPERIENCE
Richard and I were traveling through Bologna and I found the most special farmhouse/cooking class in the countryside of Bologna. The owners were lovely, engaging and we were in awe of the whole experience. A husband-and-wife team running a farm, restaurant, cooking school, and a B&B as well. This secret Bologna experience has stayed on top of our minds every time we think of Italy.
Cooking Class
We signed up for the cooking class. Richard and I were intrigued with the Bologna version of Bolognese sauce. The mixture of beef was different than our normal mix of beef and pork. While much simpler with just beef, and using white wine instead of red, we were pleasantly surprised with how delicious the end result was. Of course, Richard required me to do the “stirring” as I am not the “chef” in our family!
Bed and Breakfast
While Podere San Giuliano is not a large space for travelers, they have 5 rooms available for events and/or travelers stopping over. They are furnished with the early 20th century and all the comforts of home. Are you looking for a peaceful retreat in the countryside? These rooms could be the ideal location. These rooms have AC, Wi-Fi, an in-room kettle with tea, and of course, a tasty breakfast!
Pasta Making Lessons
While we learned the Bolognese sauce, we also had a lesson in the traditional methods of making tortellini, tortelloni as well as Tagliatelle. We used several different fillings for the tortelloni’s such as spinach and ricotta topped with sage butter. While a labor of love, the experience was the best!
Time to Eat?
Well, this is the best part of the story. We so enjoyed all the talking and wine tasting with Federica, that we finished cooking finally when it was time for us to depart (4 hours later) with our private transfer. So what do you do, when you haven’t had the time to sit down to enjoy the fruits of your labor? Well, you make it “to-go” of course. We would have loved another 2 hours enjoying our dinner with Federica at her amazing restaurant, but alas, we had to leave and enjoy our dinner at our hotel. We will be back to experience more of her hospitality and wonderful countryside establishment.
Do you want to visit Bologna and experience the same lovely experience? You can set up a call with me here and let’s talk about your next trip to Italy! Buon Appetito!
