New Year, New Orleans
It might only be the second month of the new year, but that doesn’t mean we can’t start planning for more travel. New Orleans might not be that new, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t offer new experiences. New year, New Orleans!
A Unique Culture
One of the most fascinating parts of New Orleans is how it is so much different than anywhere else in the United States. The city is part European, part Caribbean, and part African. A former French colony, populated by Natives and slaves/former slaves all combining together.
Eat the Cajun and Creole cuisine that rose from the mixing of cultures. These include foods like Po’boy sandwiches, oysters, jambalaya, and gumbo. Throw in a collection of beverages like NOLA beer and Hurricane cocktails and you’ve got a selection of good meals.
Sights To See
You have so much to see down in New Orleans. The French Quarter is perhaps most famous, looking straight out of the 18th century. Bars, churches, and beautiful homes are plentiful here.
Perhaps you want to see some of the surrounding areas, rather than just stay in the city itself? There are tours around the bayou that allow you to kayak around the swamps that surround the city. This area was a key part of the early development of the city, as it provided food and commerce routes. It isn’t as important these days, but it’s still cool to see the alligators and the early environment of the city.
Hear The Sounds of the City
One of the elements that make up the DNA of New Orleans is jazz. There are street bands and jazz clubs on just about every street. Frenchman Street has a whole lot of these bars and cafes that anyone can sit back and relax in.
But it isn’t just jazz that comes from the city. You’ve also got burlesque and cabaret clubs that can keep your ears tuned. Modern dance clubs that power along your feet and fill your ears are common as well. Learn how to Cajun dance at one of the many bars or restaurants in the city. Then you can go home and show off a new skill!
Party Like Nobody’s Watching
Everyone knows about Mardi Gras, the famous celebration that has become synonymous with New Orleans. Parades, beads, costumes, and drinking are all abound in this cultural event. While Mardi Gras has been interrupted by COVID, the celebration is one of the most attractive parts of the city. Bourbon Street has become one of the most famous in America for this celebration.
New Orleans has so many features to offer that it would be nearly impossible to cover them all in one guide. There are city parks, houses from the American Civil War, haunted Voodoo tours, and more. Especially as the COVID vaccines begin to roll out on a wider scale, this is a great time to look at New Orleans for your next trip. I am here to help. You can start here or by emailing here. I look forward to finding the right destination and experience for you.
