Let’s talk about Lisbon. This is one of the most underrated capitals in Western Europe. This capital city started as a trading port back in 1200 BC. However, most of the capital city was destroyed in an earthquake in the 1700s. Lisbon has the nickname of the “City of Light”. In this blog, we are going to talk about some of the things that it is most known for and what you can experience if you were to go and visit this European capital city.
Best Time to Visit
So knowing the best time to visit this wonderful city is important. This is considered a shoulder season destination. Why you might ask? Well, in the winter is rainy and cloudy and can feel very deserted. During the summer months (peak tourist season) its unbearably hot! So the best times to visit Lisbon are March to May (Spring season) or September to November (Fall season). During these times, the weather is quite pleasant.
What To Do in Lisbon
Ahh, so what wonderful things can you look forward to when you visit this city? It is has it all, from colonial architecture to museums. Be sure to ride the iconic yellow tram, walk along the bustling waterfront or explore a fortified castle. And let’s not forget the food scene which will range from 5 star Michelin restaurants to famous food trucks with cereal bars. Or maybe just get lost wandering the colorful cobblestone streets and alleys.
A Few Things To Note
Just a couple of points to keep in mind while visiting Lisbon. The local currency is the Euro. TIP: I find the best exchange rates come when you go to a local bank ATM upon arrival into the country to get cash. The language spoken is Portuguese. This could be a handy link. Learn more Portuguese phrases. Cords/Plugins: Portugal uses type F and type C plugs. The U.S. uses type A and B. So, pack an adapter. Since the voltage in Portugal is 230V you may also need to bring a converter if you’re using an appliance that isn’t compatible with 230V. This is especially true with heat appliances, such as a flat iron or curling iron.
