Let’s dig in and explore Colombia’s complete destination collection. Many people’s experiences of Colombia might be limited to Narcos or jokes about cocaine. However, there is so much more to this wonderful land. Whether it is exploring the streets of Medellín and Bogotá or exploring the vast jungles, there’s plenty to do in this South American destination. Read on to see Colombia’s complete destination collection.
Bogotá’s Brilliance
Some capitals aren’t really worth a visit. That is most certainly not true here. Bogotá is a brilliant blend of both the past and present, with many cultures present in the city. The Colombian capital is home to many different activities. The National Museum of Colombia, Simón Bolívar Park, clubs, bars, and jewelry stores are just a hint of what’s here. It is the largest city for a reason. You could spend months here and not run out of things to do. The fact that you can visit any time of the year and experience sunny weather is a definite plus.
Metro Around Medellín
Once one of the most dangerous places in the world, Medellín has undergone a crazy transition. It is now a widely safe and modern city, with a metro train system allowing for rapid transport. Take a walking tour to see some of the plazas and sights on offer with a friendly guide. You can drop in at a local futbol match for either Atlético Nacional and Independiente Medellín at a low price. Perhaps a day trip to the local hilltop village of Guatapé is more along with your interests. Toss in a food tour or a trip to a microbrewery, and you’ve got quite the schedule of Medellín activities.
Scour The Lost City
Do you want to feel like Indiana Jones or Lara Croft? Located in the jungles of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains sits the Ciudad Perdida or “The Lost City”. These ruins are even estimated to be older than Machu Picchu! You’ll need to hire a local guide to explore these ruins, which can take between 3-6 days. If you want to get away from the cities and explore the ancient jungles of Colombia, this should interest you.
Bake on Cartegana’s Beaches
If the huge city life and jungle ruins lifestyle haven’t piqued your interest yet, perhaps Caribbean beaches will. The entire region of the city and surrounding islands is known as “Cartagena de Indias”. It will provide you with all the sun and relaxation of a regular Caribbean island, but has a historical legacy too. It’s been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, while it also has clubs and restaurants for fans of the modern era.
Note
Colombia has come a long way from the dangers of narcos and drug trafficking dominance. However, it is generally still recommended to keep symbols of wealth like phones and jewelry hidden while in public.
Colombia in the modern-day deserves more than the shadow of the past. It offers so many experiences of both the new and old, from mountains and jungles to beaches and cities. No matter what sort of experience you are looking for, you can find it in Colombia.
